Justice is a level playing field
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain (Isaiah 40:4).
Isn't Isaiah giving us a metaphor for justice?
Justice and injustice can be understood by thinking about three things - always three things. With this metaphor for justice, think of 1) level ground, 2) a pit and 3) a mound. When level ground exists between us, justice is present. However, when I dig a pit in your ground or you dig a pit in my ground, an injustice has taken place. Justice requires that it be filled. Not half filled; not three quarters full; but filled to the brim. By the same token, not overfilled either. Exalt the valley but only to ground level. Lay low the hills but only to level ground. No more than level ground; No less than level ground.
